About the Hair Transplant Procedure
A hair transplant is a type of surgery where we remove small punch grafts from the hair-bearing scalp to relocate it to a bald or thinning area of the scalp. There are two methods for this type of transplant: follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transplantation (FUT), also known as follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS).
With FUSS, the surgeon removes a 6- to 10-inch strip of skin from the back of your head. They set it aside and sew the scalp closed. The hair around it immediately hides this area. The surgeon will divide the strip into 500 to 2,000 tiny grafts, depending on your hair type, quality, and color. It also depends on the size of the area affected by hair loss.
For the FUE procedure, our surgeons will shave the back of your scalp and individually remove hair follicles. The area heals with small dots, which your existing hair will cover.
After that point, both hair transplant procedures are the same. After preparing the grafts, the surgeon will clean and numb the area where the hair will go. They will then create holes or slits where the grafts will be placed.
What to Expect After the Transplant
You may experience scalp tenderness after the surgery, so you may need to take medications and wear bandages over your scalp for several days. Our surgeons may also prescribe an antibiotic or anti-inflammatory drug that you can take for several days. But overall, the hair transplant recovery is shorter than expected. Most of our clients actually return to work 2-5 days after the operation.
Additionally, a hair transplant usually only takes 4-9 hours, depending on the size of the transplant you need. You can also get more procedures later in case you continue losing hair or decide you want thicker hair.
